5 MINUTES WITH CAPTAIN ALEX

Meet Captain Alex!! Captain Alex is a senior skipper on our team, and we asked him to share his experiences and thoughts on Sydney Harbour. Here’s what we discovered in 5 minutes:

What do you love most about being a skipper on Sydney Harbour?

I love spending my days on the water in Sydney Harbour. It is an amazing city and harbour to work on. Every day I get to go and do the activities I love most and helping customers get the best experience on the harbour is a great pleasure.

Have you always wanted to work in the boating industry? How did your passion and love for boats come about?

I started working for Sydney Ferries when I was in high school selling ferry tickets. Working my way up the ladder and learning about boats, intrigued me so much that I had to keep working at the ferries. After high school, I became a deckhand and worked my way up to becoming a skipper. Most of this passion came from my family as both my father and siblings all worked at the ferries with me; this played a role in pushing my skills to become a skipper.

Which vessel from the Sea Sydney Harbour (SSH) fleet is your favourite and why?

From the SSH fleet, I would have to say Fleetwing II is my favourite. This is one of our larger vessels that is a favourite for our charter clients too.

Fleetwing II is also the first vessel I worked on as a skipper at SSH so I feel I have an attachment to the vessel. However, Kirralee and Heaven are both amazing vessels to cruise Sydney Harbour on – Heaven is the sister vessel to Fleetwing II and has similar features, while Kirralee is our resort-style catamaran and is great for Summer cruises.

What is your most memorable experience at Sea Sydney Harbour?

In 2022 I had the pleasure of bringing the newest vessel to our fleet Heaven up from Victoria with our great team of skippers and crew. This was a new experience, spending a week at sea going along the Australian coastline. We saw so many amazing things and it pushed my skills as a skipper, as we encountered a large storm along the way.

Where is your favourite swimming spot on Sydney Harbour?

I love taking guests to Taylor’s Bay in Sydney Harbour. This is up around the North Shore area and is a great option to take guests for a swim in Summer. It does not get overcrowded with charter vessels, making it peaceful and enjoyable for all guests and crew members. Taylor’s Bay is also a good bay in Winter, as it does not get too cold or windy and the water stays quite calm.

Imagine sipping a glass of wine under the stars, surrounded by breathtaking views of Sydney’s iconic landmarks – all while enjoying good company.

WHY HIRING A BOAT ON SYDNEY HARBOUR IS A MUST

1. Spectacular scenic backdrop – Sydney Harbour is renowned for its unparalleled beauty, and there’s no better way to appreciate it than from the deck of a boat. Your Christmas party will be framed by the glittering city skyline, the iconic Sydney Opera House, and the majestic Sydney Harbour Bridge. This natural and architectural beauty creates an enchanting atmosphere that instantly elevates your event to a whole new level.

2. A unique, unforgettable experience – Break away from the norm and give your guests an unforgettable experience. A Christmas party on a boat is a departure from the traditional indoor setting, offering an opportunity for your guests to socialise, dance, and celebrate in an open-air environment. The gentle lapping of waves, the cool breeze, and the twinkling lights of the city create a magical ambience that’s sure to leave a lasting impression.

3. Customisable venues and sizes – Whether you’re hosting a small family gathering or a larger corporate bash, boats on Sydney Harbour come in a range of sizes and styles. You have the flexibility to choose a vessel that perfectly matches your party’s size and theme. Many boats offer multiple decks, indoor and outdoor spaces, bars and even a space to dance.

4. Stress-free planning – When you hire a boat for your Christmas party, you’re not just renting a venue – you’re enlisting a team of experts to help you plan and execute your event flawlessly. Within the Sea Sydney Harbour team, we have experienced event coordinators who can assist with details from catering to entertainment and logistics. This allows you to relax and enjoy the party while leaving the details in capable hands.

5. Build stronger connections – Being on a boat in a private, more intimate setting encourages mingling and interaction among guests. It’s an opportunity for people to connect and socialise in a way that might not be possible in a larger, traditional venue. Boat parties cater to all ages -kids can enjoy the excitement of being on a boat, while adults can relish the scenic views and festive ambience.

6. Escape the hustle and bustle – Sydney can get quite busy during the holiday season, but when you’re out on the water, you can escape the crowded streets and enjoy a serene and peaceful atmosphere. It’s a tranquil oasis away from the holiday rush.

This holiday season, step away from the ordinary and embark on a nautical journey that will leave a lasting imprint on your guests’ hearts. Hiring a boat on Sydney Harbour for your Christmas party is more than just an event – it’s an adventure that combines stunning visuals, exceptional service, and a unique atmosphere. It’s the perfect opportunity to reflect on the year that’s passed and set intentions for the one ahead.

LET’S EXPLORE VIVID SYDNEY

BYO Vivid Sydney Cruise - Kirralee

Vivid lights are our favourite part of the Winter festival! The light show spreads across the city – from the Sydney Opera House area to Darling Harbour and beyond, across the Sydney Harbour Bridge and to the North Sydney areas, and it even spreads over to Taronga Zoo. On a clear night, the lights can be seen from over 6km away from high areas in Sydney.

Image: @tikaandhini

After 10 years of lighting up the city, Vivid Sydney was confirmed to be the biggest festival of lights in the world with 2.4 million people attending in 2019 and each year thereafter, increasing further.

6 INTERESTING BEHIND THE SCENES VIVID FACTS

  • Inspiration for the creation of this festival struck, after one of the creators, Anthony Bastic, saw beautiful, illuminated buildings in London.
  • It takes 5.2km of network cable to light up the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the city.
  • It takes 6 weeks to set up for the festival, with the Sydney Harbour Bridge display solely taking 3 weeks to set up. Planning and creating the artworks takes 11+ months.
  • Each year Destination NSW receive over 200 artist applications.
  • Approximately 800 volunteers are engaged to make this event possible.
  • Since 2019, the festival has been 100% green power.

TOP WAYS TO EXPLORE THE VIVID LIGHTS

Walk & Explore – If you are a keen walker and explorer, you can walk along the 8.5km Vivid Light Walk, following the light displays through Circular Quay, The Rocks, Walsh Bay, Barangaroo and Darling Harbour. Get up close and personal with the sculptures, take photos and interact with the artworks. If you need a break, you can always stop at one of the many restaurants or bars along the way.

Cruise & Relax – If you prefer a more relaxed atmosphere to see the lights, with fewer crowds and physical activity, then viewing the Vivid lights from a boat is a great option. The view from the water is glamourous, as the water glistens, and the building lights shine and sparkle. It’s a great way to see the Vivid lights without the busyness of the city, and cruising on a smaller vessel allows you to cruise close to the shoreline, offering some picturesque Instagram-able shots of the Vivid displays.

Sea Sydney Harbour offers cruising experiences for a range of budgets including ticketed and private hire options. Cruises run throughout the festival on Kirralee, Heaven and Fleetwing II. All experiences are great for corporate and team gatherings, or to simply share a sparkling night out with your family and friends. Start or end your night out with a Vivid Sydney Harbour Cruise!

There is also the option to upgrade your booking to a Cruise & Dine Package, which includes a delicious dinner at Jounieh Walsh Bay.

Vivid Sydney 2023 runs from Friday 26th May through to Saturday 17th June 2023. Secure your ticket on board and experience Vivid Sydney from the water – this is not a boat you want to miss!

HEN’S PARTY GAMES

Planning a Hen’s Party for your bestie and that beautiful bride-to-be? Already booked a boat cruise ✔️✔️✔️ and now planning for some fun games while on board?

The Sea Sydney Harbour team have created a list of fun-filled, boat-suitable, games to play with your group – it’s all about stress-free and easy planning and you can use our templates, or make these games as funny or as naughty as you like!

WOULD SHE RATHER

It’s time to see how well you know the bride!

This game is for all on board to play. Create a quiz sheet prior to the day and list 10-15 different preferences, with two similar choices noted e.g coffee vs tea. The party guests must then answer what they think the bride would prefer. After the game is played, the sheets are checked with the bride and the highest score wins!

Would She Rather

NEVER HAVE I EVER

Bet you didn’t know that!

Let’s find out more about the guests and the bride-to-be, with this fun and revealing card game. Questions are asked around the group and guests respond with HAVE or HAVE NOT. It’s funny, embarrassing and revealing and an ideal game for groups, as it’s a great icebreaker!

Purchase the game online here, or you can make your own version.

HELP WRITE THE BRIDE’S VOWS

Sometimes an outside observer has some great insights! What should the bride say on her special day?

Prior to the day, bridesmaids can create a vow template for the group or you can use ours. Party guests must come up with the missing words to the vows making them fun and exciting (or naughty), bringing laughter into the group. There is no limit to how creative the group can get filling in the blanks.

Help Write The Bride’s Vows

TWO TRUTHS & A LIE (BRIDE EDITION)

How good are the bride squad’s poker faces?

The maid of honour and the bridesmaids come up with a series of two truths mixed with a lie. Make this all about the bride and the couple, such as how the bride and groom met, the bride’s initial thoughts of the groom, plans for the future, etc… Get as personal as the bride-to-be will let you get!

Present the statements to the group, who must then choose which is the lie. This game is exciting with laughter and fun for everyone.

‘FIND SOMEONE WHO’ BINGO

Great for larger groups on the boat, or if you’re hosting a Hen’s Party on land and venue hopping.

This game gets all the ladies involved and is great to get your group mingling amongst each other, or with others at the same venue. It can be played in small groups or individually, with the aim to be the first to “find someone who” ticks each of the boxes on the BINGO card. The person or group that crosses off all their card first is the winner!

You can use the BINGO card that we have created, or add and change details on the card, tailored to your group and/or venue.

Hen’s Party Bingo

COCKTAIL QUIZ

Who is the true cocktail queen?!?

This game involves the group naming as many cocktails as possible – a great game for people that like to work under pressure and love to enjoy a good cocktail. The bride to be can start the game off, and the next person’s cocktail name must start with the last letter of the cocktail named prior. When you can’t come up with a cocktail name, you’re eliminated from the game and the last lady standing wins! The winner can then create their favourite cocktail for the group.

Have fun playing these games with your Hen’s Party guests, and be sure to enjoy the planning time with the bride squad too. Some games noted may require some bridesmaid preparation prior to the day and prizes are a great idea to have for the winners.

Don’t forget to secure your unique harbour venue and set sail before the veil. Reach out to the Sea Sydney Harbour team or click here to find out more information on our Hen’s Package options – email info@seasydneyharbour.com.au or phone +61 452 188 739.

THE CAPTAIN’S CHRISTMAS TREATS

Christmas is the time for celebrations, fun, good food and drinks, and great company – whether it be on the water or on land. Bonding with your family and friends over Christmas treats and activities is a loved pass-time and one of Captain Frank’s favourite things about Christmas. For those that love food and fun activities, there is no better time of the year!

Want to enjoy some special treats and foodie fun this holiday season? Here are some ideas to explore for making and baking and some of the Captain’s favourites…

CHRISTMAS TREATS & FUN

Shortbread – Everyone loves a good homemade shortbread cookie, and these can be baked in all shapes and sizes, including Christmas trees, stars, Santa, reindeers, etc. This is a fun activity for all involved so gather your friends and family together and cook away. Don’t forget to decorate the cookies, using Christmas coloured icing (or nautical coloured). A true Christmas classic!

Fruit Mince Pies – For a long-lasting Christmas treat, a fruit mince pie will do the trick. This tasty treat is a classic and homemade pies are a favourite. With a mix of fruit, nuts and spices the fruit mince pie is mixed together and left to rest until the pastry cups are cooked and ready to go.

Rum Balls – One for the adults, a classic rum ball puts a twist on all Christmas party occasions. The secret of a rum ball is that they don’t actually contain too much rum, however, this is your personal preference, and you can add more or less according to your liking. Decorate as you please and enjoy them for yourself or give them as a gift. You can never go wrong with an indulgent rum ball, and rum is the liquor of choice for many sailors and sea captains!

Gingerbread Houses – Get the family together and entertain the kids with some gingerbread house creations. Having a gingerbread house bake-off is a great Christmas Day pass-time to keep everyone busy. With house kits available in a number of stores and supermarkets, it’s a fun activity for all ages to do. Add on some extras to the decorations (perhaps some nautical fun) and work to create the best house of all!

The Trifle – One of the longest-running classic desserts around, dating all the way back to the 1500’s; the trifle is the most classic and timeless dessert. Families for generations have passed down their trifle recipes so this dessert often contains family secrets, making each version unique and different. This dish is layered with everyone’s favourites including jelly, custard, cream, jam sponge scrolls and fresh fruit, and the layers piled up look amazing in those beautiful glass dishes.

Pick just one or two treat options, or if you and the kids are on holidays, why not try all these fun treat ideas!?! Share them in person with your family and friends and share your creations with Captain Frank and the team on Instagram.

WHY CHOOSE A CATAMARAN ?

Celebrating on Sydney Harbour is the ultimate party venue for locals and visitors to Sydney, but with an array of boats floating around the harbour, how do you know which boat you should hire?

The team at Sea Sydney Harbour (SSH) are experts in the industry and we specialise in catamaran hire because we believe this type of vessel is the ideal way to explore and celebrate on the harbour.

Here are our top reasons, why your boat of choice should be a catamaran when hiring a vessel for your next harbour cruise.

WHY A CATAMARAN ?

1. Great layouts and a large amount of space – Catamarans are wider than monohulls, and ultimately this allows them to offer much more deck space for you and your guests to enjoy. While catamarans are often associated with cruising in the warmer months, they have a great mix of indoor and outdoor areas and can be enjoyed in all weather conditions. The layout onboard is functional and allows guests to mingle easily and enjoy the water comfortably.

2. Safe and stable – As catamarans have two hulls, the stability of the vessel is great. The vessel will cut through the water smoothly and there is no severe rocking from side to side. It’s like having two feet on the ground instead of one – you have much more balance! If you’re someone that fears swell or is prone to motion sickness, a catamaran will allow you the best opportunity to enjoy your cruise.

3. Views all round – Catamarans give you the best 360-degree views you can ask for! With Sydney Harbour being one of the best in the world, whether you are a local or visitor to the city, you don’t want to be on a boat and not enjoy the views of the famous Sydney landmarks and cityscape. With spacious saloon areas, and large clear windows these vessels are ideal for general sightseeing, but even better for special events such as viewing the Sydney NYE fireworks or Vivid Sydney from the water.

4. Cruising in shallow water is easy – Hiring a vessel in Summer and hoping to go for a swim? Catamarans have a very shallow draft, which means your skipper can manoeuvre the vessel through shallow waters, where other vessels may not be able to go. The vessel can anchor in quiet coves and get close to beaches, so if you are planning to take a dip in the harbour, this can be done in shallow bays and waters.

5. Those holiday feels – Ever find yourself daydreaming of Summer in Europe, cruising the Greek Islands, Croatia, or any other beautiful island? We know we do! The catamaran – with those front nets to feel the splash of the fresh water on your legs – is the iconic symbol of a holiday experience on the water, and cruising on a catamaran in Sydney Harbour, is the closest experience to those holiday feels that you can get, without leaving your local city.

Are you convinced yet?!? These are just a few reasons why your boat of choice should be a catamaran when you want to get out on Sydney Harbour next. If you have questions or want further information on catamaran options, the Sea Sydney Harbour team is always happy to help.

SYDNEY HARBOUR COVES – OUR TOP PICKS

When hiring a boat on Sydney Harbour, spending some time at anchor in a harbour cove, is a common pass-time. Whether this is to take a dip in the water, cook a BBQ on board, or simply enjoy some amazing views from a unique perspective, there is an array of spots to choose from.

Our team are local experts on the harbour, and they frequently visit coves and locations that they know guests on board will love. Who better to ask for their top picks?!?

ATHOL BAY

A very popular location situated on the north of the harbour near the infamous Taronga Zoo. This bay is sheltered from the Summer winds, so provides charter guests with a comfortable, smooth spot to anchor. Located not too far from a secluded beach, those that a confident swimmers or excellent paddle boarders, can make their way to the sand bank by water, or simply enjoy a swim near to the vessel. Better yet, if you are out on the water at sunset, this location provides spectacular views of the sun setting on Sydney Harbour, with the iconic Harbour Bridge and Opera House as the amazing backdrop.

TAYLOR’S BAY

A beautiful, secluded, quiet bay, you can’t go wrong with a stop here! Also located on the northern side of the harbour, this bay whispers serenity. It’s perfect to stop at when on a day cruise with friends, family or even for a romantic adventure, and if you want to take a dip in the harbour you can do so. It’s also an amazing place to anchor should you wish to stay overnight on the harbour, and sleep in a peaceful environment.

MILK BEACH

A very popular swimming destination, and one that guests often request to visit! Due to its location, cruising here can be impacted by the swirl and weather conditions on the day, but if you do get the opportunity to visit, Milk Beach is a great all-rounder! It has beautiful views of the city and your experience here will certainly be memorable, with the opportunity to snap some Instaworthy shots. It’s also great for a swim and vessels can often anchor quite close to the beach.

ROSE BAY

In addition to having a nice, soothing name to the bay, this location is popular for its stunning views of the whole harbour. You can get great postcard shots from this bay, and you won’t miss viewing any of the Sydney landmarks. Located on the east side of Sydney, this location is also popular for boarding and disembarking vessels from the local wharf.

NEILSEN BAY

An area located not too far away from Rose Bay, if you have your heart set on spending time swimming and having water fun, this location is ideal. Neilsen Park has shark nets in the water, so if you have guests in your group that are concerned about the harbour’s wildlife, you can ease their worries. It’s also a nice location generally and not too overcrowded with vessels on the water.

BOAT PARTY PLANNING TIPS

Having a party on a boat on Sydney Harbour is the ultimate way to have fun and take in the amazing sites. Let your planning process also be fun and stress-free, by following these simple planning tips!

TOP PLANNING TIPS

The Sea Sydney Harbour team spend their days planning and organising events on boats. Discover their top planning tips to follow…

1. Have an initial idea on guest numbers – All vessels have a maximum capacity that they must work within. Having a clear idea of your guest numbers is important for a boat party in your early planning stages, to ensure that you book the most suitable vessel for your group size. Where possible, leaving a little bit of leeway in case guest numbers change is a good idea, but remember when you confirm a booking you are locking in that specific vessel.

2. Keep it simple – Being on a boat is an activity in itself. Your group will be entertained for hours mingling and enjoying food and drinks, and will love the time on board. Don’t feel the need to fill up the schedule with lots of extra activities – one or two is fine but allow time for your group to just enjoy each other’s company and being on a boat on Sydney Harbour.

3. Try not to worry about the weather – Bring your positive vibes on the day and you will have a good time.  While we definitely hope the sun is shining, rain or shine, you WILL have fun with your family and friends!

4. Decide on a boarding location that is convenient for you – Consider how you and your guests will be getting to the wharf on the day e.g. public transport or driving, and select a location accordingly. Plan to arrive 15 minutes before your cruise is set to commence to avoid any delays. While generally boarding and disembarking does take place at the same location, if you have alternate plans after your cruise, a different location can be an option.

5. Plan adequate food for all – If you choose to BYO food and drinks, ensure there is a substantial amount for all. The simplest idea for food is pre-prepared platters or BBQ items, as this keeps preparation to a minimum when on board. If choosing to bring food for the BBQ, our friendly crew will cook this for you. All BBQ utensils and cleaning products are available onboard, so you just need to bring your food and drinks for the day.

6. Don’t forget your drinking water – A must for all boat charters, but something that is often forgotten. Don’t forget this!

7. Limit decorations and extra items – All vessels are well-maintained and where décor is used the look is modern and sophisticated. We understand that some events are planned with a specific theme in mind, however, limiting decorations and items being brought on board will make the boarding and disembarking process quicker and easier. Remember that planning an event on a boat is different to land venues, and bump-in time or pre-access cannot always be offered, so it is a good idea to keep it simple. At the end of your cruise, items brought on board will also need to be taken off or disposed of, so keep this in mind.

8. Communicate accurate details to your guests – To avoid stress and lots of phone calls on the day, ensure all your guests have accurate details, including cruise date and time, exact boarding location (with a link if possible), and advise them if you want them to bring anything with them on the day.

Use these simple tips to help you have a smooth, stress-free planning process in the lead up to your cruise celebration. The Sea Sydney Harbour team is always happy to help and assist with your planning too.
