SET SAIL IN STYLE & DRESS TO IMPRESS

Are you ready to embark on a nautical adventure like no other? Hosting a party on a boat offers a unique and exciting opportunity to create unforgettable memories against the backdrop of shimmering waters and endless horizons. And what better way to elevate the experience than with a fantastic dress-up theme?

Whether you’re celebrating a birthday or anniversary, or simply seizing the day for a social gathering, here are some of the best dress-up theme party ideas to make your boat bash a tidal wave of fun.

Retro Era

Step back in time to the glamorous era of the 1950s or 1920s with a retro-themed cruise party. Encourage guests to dress in period-appropriate attire such as flapper dresses, fedoras, poodle skirts, and bow ties. Set the scene with vintage decorations, old-fashioned cocktails, and a live band playing swing or jazz music for added nostalgia.

Pirate Party

Ahoy, matey! Channel your inner swashbuckler and transform your boat into a pirate ship for the day. Encourage your guests to don eye patches, bandanas, tricorn hats, and billowy shirts. Complete the look with accessories like swords, parrots, and gold doubloons. Set the mood with pirate-themed decorations, such as skull and crossbones flags and treasure chests.

Tropical Luau

Bring the warmth of the tropics aboard with a vibrant luau theme. Deck out your boat with leis, and inflatable palm trees to create a festive island atmosphere. Guests can dress in grass skirts, Hawaiian shirts, and flower crowns while sipping on fruity cocktails. Don’t forget to play some upbeat island tunes to get everyone hula dancing the night away.

Under the Sea Soiree

Dive into an enchanting underwater world with an under-the-sea theme party. Encourage guests to dress as mermaids, sea creatures, or scuba divers. Serve seafood-inspired appetizers and cocktails garnished with edible pearls for a whimsical touch and transform your boat into a magical oceanic paradise with shimmering blue decorations.

Hollywood Glamour Night

Roll out the red carpet and bring the glitz and glamour of Hollywood to the high seas. Invite guests to dress like their favourite movie stars from the past or present, whether it’s Marilyn Monroe, James Bond, or Audrey Hepburn. Decorate the boat with sparkling lights, velvet ropes, and a makeshift movie marquee. Host a themed trivia game or encourage some red-carpet performances to keep the excitement going throughout the night.

No matter which theme you choose, remember that the key to a successful dress-up party on a boat is creativity, enthusiasm, and a sense of adventure. With the right theme and decorations, you can turn an ordinary boat ride into an extraordinary experience that will leave your guests talking for years to come.

So, hoist the sails, set your course, and get ready to sail into a sea of unforgettable memories. It’s time to get the party started!

SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE: TRIVIA & FUN FACTS

If you’re planning a trip to the Sydney Opera House, you might already know it’s one of the world’s most iconic structures. But here’s the thing: there’s more to this Aussie gem than meets the eye. We’ve rustled up some trivia and fun facts about the Sydney Opera House that’ll leave you amazed.

A Shell-ter of Stories, Mate!

The Opera House isn’t just a pretty face; it’s got stories to tell. Did you know it took a whopping 16 years to build? From 1959 to 1973, they worked diligently and with great determination to assemble the iconic shells that you see today.

A Star-Studded Opening Night

When the Opera House finally flung open its doors in 1973, the first performer was none other than Paul Robeson. The famous singer belted out some tunes, making it an unforgettable night. The Opera House has been hosting A-listers ever since.

More Than an Opera House

While it’s got “Opera” in its name, the place isn’t just about singing. You can catch ballet, theatre, and even rock concerts under those iconic sails. It’s a versatile venue!

Acoustic Marvels

Now, the Opera House isn’t just a looker; it’s a listener, too – one of the world’s most iconic monuments, and a symphony to the senses. With over one million tiles, its shells are designed to create the perfect sound. You’ll hear every note, even the didgeridoo’s drone!

Best View from the Water

Here’s a genuine piece of advice for you: one of the best views of the Opera House is from the water. Hop on a harbour cruise, and you’ll get a stunning view. It’s like seeing an old friend from a whole new angle.

Jørn Utzon: The Man Behind the Shells

The genius behind those iconic sails is a Danish architect named Jørn Utzon. His design won the competition to build the Opera House, and he created a masterpiece. He’s like the Picasso of the architectural world.

A World Heritage Treasure

In 2007, the Sydney Opera House secured a position on the UNESCO World Heritage List. It’s not just a national treasure; it’s a global one! That’s right, it’s not just a local legend; it’s a globally renowned marvel.

Shelling Out for Repairs

Remember those tiles we mentioned earlier? Well, they’re not all the same colour. They come in a few shades and replacing them is like fitting together a giant jigsaw puzzle. The Opera House shells get a touch-up every now and then to keep them looking fresh.

In conclusion, when you visit the Sydney Opera House, you’ll have the opportunity to discover its fascinating history and appreciate its versatile functions. To wrap it up, don’t forget the golden rule – the best view of the Opera House is from the water on a harbour cruise. The views are particularly spectacular at sunset, as the golden hues of the sun cast a magical glow on the iconic sails.

Get up close and personal with this icon and take in the sunset view of the Opera House from the water with a traveller favourite – the Sunset & Sparkle Harbour Cruise. Your departure location is conveniently located near the Opera House steps, offering you the opportunity to admire this landmark from both the land and water with just one tick. ✅ So, set sail, soak in the sights, and enjoy your visit!

5 MINUTES WITH CAPTAIN ALEX

Meet Captain Alex!! Captain Alex is a senior skipper on our team, and we asked him to share his experiences and thoughts on Sydney Harbour. Here’s what we discovered in 5 minutes:

What do you love most about being a skipper on Sydney Harbour?

I love spending my days on the water in Sydney Harbour. It is an amazing city and harbour to work on. Every day I get to go and do the activities I love most and helping customers get the best experience on the harbour is a great pleasure.

Have you always wanted to work in the boating industry? How did your passion and love for boats come about?

I started working for Sydney Ferries when I was in high school selling ferry tickets. Working my way up the ladder and learning about boats, intrigued me so much that I had to keep working at the ferries. After high school, I became a deckhand and worked my way up to becoming a skipper. Most of this passion came from my family as both my father and siblings all worked at the ferries with me; this played a role in pushing my skills to become a skipper.

Which vessel from the Sea Sydney Harbour (SSH) fleet is your favourite and why?

From the SSH fleet, I would have to say Fleetwing II is my favourite. This is one of our larger vessels that is a favourite for our charter clients too.

Fleetwing II is also the first vessel I worked on as a skipper at SSH so I feel I have an attachment to the vessel. However, Kirralee and Heaven are both amazing vessels to cruise Sydney Harbour on – Heaven is the sister vessel to Fleetwing II and has similar features, while Kirralee is our resort-style catamaran and is great for Summer cruises.

What is your most memorable experience at Sea Sydney Harbour?

In 2022 I had the pleasure of bringing the newest vessel to our fleet Heaven up from Victoria with our great team of skippers and crew. This was a new experience, spending a week at sea going along the Australian coastline. We saw so many amazing things and it pushed my skills as a skipper, as we encountered a large storm along the way.

Where is your favourite swimming spot on Sydney Harbour?

I love taking guests to Taylor’s Bay in Sydney Harbour. This is up around the North Shore area and is a great option to take guests for a swim in Summer. It does not get overcrowded with charter vessels, making it peaceful and enjoyable for all guests and crew members. Taylor’s Bay is also a good bay in Winter, as it does not get too cold or windy and the water stays quite calm.

SEA SYDNEY HARBOUR

Sea Sydney Harbour operates 7 days a week offering private charters and harbour tours. We are happy to create customised packages and accommodate to customer requests for charter dates, times and boarding/disembarking locations on Sydney Harbour.

Create lasting memories and experience the joy of Sydney Harbour. Visit www.seasydneyharbour.com.au for further information. For enquiries or to book your private charter email the team at info@seasydneyharbour.com.au.

LET’S EXPLORE VIVID SYDNEY

BYO Vivid Sydney Cruise - Kirralee

Vivid lights are our favourite part of the Winter festival! The light show spreads across the city – from the Sydney Opera House area to Darling Harbour and beyond, across the Sydney Harbour Bridge and to the North Sydney areas, and it even spreads over to Taronga Zoo. On a clear night, the lights can be seen from over 6km away from high areas in Sydney.

Image: @tikaandhini

After 10 years of lighting up the city, Vivid Sydney was confirmed to be the biggest festival of lights in the world with 2.4 million people attending in 2019 and each year thereafter, increasing further.

6 INTERESTING BEHIND THE SCENES VIVID FACTS

  • Inspiration for the creation of this festival struck, after one of the creators, Anthony Bastic, saw beautiful, illuminated buildings in London.
  • It takes 5.2km of network cable to light up the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the city.
  • It takes 6 weeks to set up for the festival, with the Sydney Harbour Bridge display solely taking 3 weeks to set up. Planning and creating the artworks takes 11+ months.
  • Each year Destination NSW receive over 200 artist applications.
  • Approximately 800 volunteers are engaged to make this event possible.
  • Since 2019, the festival has been 100% green power.

TOP WAYS TO EXPLORE THE VIVID LIGHTS

Walk & Explore – If you are a keen walker and explorer, you can walk along the 8.5km Vivid Light Walk, following the light displays through Circular Quay, The Rocks, Walsh Bay, Barangaroo and Darling Harbour. Get up close and personal with the sculptures, take photos and interact with the artworks. If you need a break, you can always stop at one of the many restaurants or bars along the way.

Cruise & Relax – If you prefer a more relaxed atmosphere to see the lights, with fewer crowds and physical activity, then viewing the Vivid lights from a boat is a great option. The view from the water is glamourous, as the water glistens, and the building lights shine and sparkle. It’s a great way to see the Vivid lights without the busyness of the city, and cruising on a smaller vessel allows you to cruise close to the shoreline, offering some picturesque Instagram-able shots of the Vivid displays.

Sea Sydney Harbour offers cruising experiences for a range of budgets including ticketed and private hire options. Cruises run throughout the festival on Kirralee, Heaven and Fleetwing II. All experiences are great for corporate and team gatherings, or to simply share a sparkling night out with your family and friends. Start or end your night out with a Vivid Sydney Harbour Cruise!

There is also the option to upgrade your booking to a Cruise & Dine Package, which includes a delicious dinner at Jounieh Walsh Bay.

Vivid Sydney 2023 runs from Friday 26th May through to Saturday 17th June 2023. Secure your ticket on board and experience Vivid Sydney from the water – this is not a boat you want to miss!

WHY CHOOSE A CATAMARAN ?

Celebrating on Sydney Harbour is the ultimate party venue for locals and visitors to Sydney, but with an array of boats floating around the harbour, how do you know which boat you should hire?

The team at Sea Sydney Harbour (SSH) are experts in the industry and we specialise in catamaran hire because we believe this type of vessel is the ideal way to explore and celebrate on the harbour.

Here are our top reasons, why your boat of choice should be a catamaran when hiring a vessel for your next harbour cruise.

WHY A CATAMARAN ?

1. Great layouts and a large amount of space – Catamarans are wider than monohulls, and ultimately this allows them to offer much more deck space for you and your guests to enjoy. While catamarans are often associated with cruising in the warmer months, they have a great mix of indoor and outdoor areas and can be enjoyed in all weather conditions. The layout onboard is functional and allows guests to mingle easily and enjoy the water comfortably.

2. Safe and stable – As catamarans have two hulls, the stability of the vessel is great. The vessel will cut through the water smoothly and there is no severe rocking from side to side. It’s like having two feet on the ground instead of one – you have much more balance! If you’re someone that fears swell or is prone to motion sickness, a catamaran will allow you the best opportunity to enjoy your cruise.

3. Views all round – Catamarans give you the best 360-degree views you can ask for! With Sydney Harbour being one of the best in the world, whether you are a local or visitor to the city, you don’t want to be on a boat and not enjoy the views of the famous Sydney landmarks and cityscape. With spacious saloon areas, and large clear windows these vessels are ideal for general sightseeing, but even better for special events such as viewing the Sydney NYE fireworks or Vivid Sydney from the water.

4. Cruising in shallow water is easy – Hiring a vessel in Summer and hoping to go for a swim? Catamarans have a very shallow draft, which means your skipper can manoeuvre the vessel through shallow waters, where other vessels may not be able to go. The vessel can anchor in quiet coves and get close to beaches, so if you are planning to take a dip in the harbour, this can be done in shallow bays and waters.

5. Those holiday feels – Ever find yourself daydreaming of Summer in Europe, cruising the Greek Islands, Croatia, or any other beautiful island? We know we do! The catamaran – with those front nets to feel the splash of the fresh water on your legs – is the iconic symbol of a holiday experience on the water, and cruising on a catamaran in Sydney Harbour, is the closest experience to those holiday feels that you can get, without leaving your local city.

Are you convinced yet?!? These are just a few reasons why your boat of choice should be a catamaran when you want to get out on Sydney Harbour next. If you have questions or want further information on catamaran options, the Sea Sydney Harbour team is always happy to help.

ATHOL BAY

A very popular location situated on the north of the harbour near the infamous Taronga Zoo. This bay is sheltered from the Summer winds, so provides charter guests with a comfortable, smooth spot to anchor. Located not too far from a secluded beach, those that a confident swimmers or excellent paddle boarders, can make their way to the sand bank by water, or simply enjoy a swim near to the vessel. Better yet, if you are out on the water at sunset, this location provides spectacular views of the sun setting on Sydney Harbour, with the iconic Harbour Bridge and Opera House as the amazing backdrop.

MILK BEACH

A very popular swimming destination, and one that guests often request to visit! It’s also great for a swim and vessels can often anchor quite close to the beach.

In addition to having a nice, soothing name to the bay, this location is popular for its stunning views of the whole harbour. You can get great postcard shots from this bay, and you won’t miss viewing any of the Sydney landmarks.
